Toyota Hybrid Technology

Overview

Mention hybrid cars, and Toyota is the brand that comes immediately to mind for most people. That's because of the Japanese automaker's groundbreaking role in the development and history of hybrids, as well as because of the great success of the Prius, the best-selling hybrid of all time. For the 2019 model year there are seven Toyota hybrid models -- six gas-electric and one plug-in (as well as one fuel cell electric). The Prius name is used strictly for hybrids, while the other Toyota hybrids are gas-electric versions of vehicles originally known in their gasoline-burning form.

The Prius, Prius Prime, and Prius c

Few will disagree that Prius is the first name in hybrids, and there are three versions of it to choose from. The model that's simply called Prius is now midway through its fourth generation and is returning for 2019 with an exciting addition: the option of all-wheel drive. Toyota's low-speed AWD-e system is powered by an electric motor and runs full-time at very low speeds, after which it behaves like any other AWD system, engaging as needed for traction. But past 43 mph the system turns off, letting the front-wheel drive and traction control combination handle everything. The FWD Prius is expected to achieve fuel economy of 54 mpg city/50 mpg highway, with the AWD version coming in at just a couple of mpg less.

The Prius Prime is Toyota's plug-in hybrid (in fact, it was previously known as the Prius Plug-In), giving eco-conscious drivers the combined force of electric and gas-electric power with truly impressive range. It also comes equipped with more base standard features than the Prius. Its claim to fame is an estimated total driving range of 640 miles, and estimated MPGe of 133. The smallest member of this trio, the Prius c, is a subcompact hatchback based on the Yaris platform. It's well equipped with advanced safety features and other amenities, and it boasts up to 48 mpg city and 43 mpg highway.

Toyota Hybrid Sedans

The 2019 Camry Hybrid combines attractive styling with impressive fuel economy, making this midsized four-door a fine family car or commuter vehicle. Besides its EPA rating of up to 51 city/53 highway, it offers a great selection of standard connectivity and active safety features. The sharp-looking Avalon Hybrid presents the same great qualities, but in a larger package with a few more luxuries and just a tad more horsepower. It's also fresh off a complete redesign, with a new appearance and features inside and out.

Toyota Hybrid SUVs

With the utility vehicle market booming, it's no surprise that Toyota offers two in hybrid form -- both of which come standard with all-wheel drive. The RAV4 Hybrid is back for the '19 model year with improvements in power and standard features, as well as best-in-class fuel economy. The Electric On-Demand AWD with Intelligence (AWD-i) system in this gas-saving crossover uses a dedicated electric motor, differential, and reduction gear and has been improved for 2019 to send up to 30 percent more torque to the rear axle.

The family-friendly Highland Hybrid also comes standard with all-wheel drive and uses the AWD-i system. It also increases the list of comfortable features, with plush standard and optional equipment. This three-row eco-friendly vehicle, which achieves up to 30 city mpg and 28 highway mpg, seats seven or eight depending on the configuration of the second row: a pair of captain's chairs or a bench for three.
