Learn About the Effect of Tire Wear on Stopping Distance

Based on an independent study conducted in 2013. Test performed at a speed of 96 kmh (~60 mph) at a water depth of .05 in. Car length is 15.76 ft. Based on testing performed under controlled conditions. Many factors can affect stopping distance, including driver response time, condition of the vehicle, and road surface texture. Use for comparison only.

We tested the effect worn tires have on stopping distance.

- 60 miles per hour on a wet road
- 3 sets of tires, each with different tread depths: 10/32", 4/32", 2/32"
- 1 professional driver

When the driver accelerated to 60 miles per hour, watch what happened when he tried to stop. While your actual distances may vary, it took him nearly 10 additional car lengths to stop on worn tires.
