Configurations and Mechanical Specs

The first step in choosing your new Tundra is deciding between the Double Cab or more spacious CrewMax body styles. Double Cab buyers can choose a bed length of either 6.5 feet or 8.1 feet; the CrewMax is made with a 5.5-foot or 6.5-foot bed. The seven trim levels are SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro, and Capstone. The availability of body styles is trim-dependent. For example, you can get the SR, SR5, and Limited with either body style, but the Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro, and Capstone only come as the CrewMax. Bed sizes may be similarly restricted, i.e., the TRD Pro and Capstone are built only with a 5.5-ft. bed.

As we mentioned, Toyota presents a selection of powertrains for the ’23 Tundra. The base SR gets a 358-horsepower (406 lb.-ft. of torque) 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6, while the SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794 Edition are boosted with a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 that puts out 389 hp and 479 lb.-ft. of torque. The TRD Pro and Capstone add an electric motor to the 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 for a combined 437 hp and 583 lb.-ft. of torque. All Tundras have a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is generally standard, with four-wheel drive as an option, except in the 4WD-only TRD Pro and Capstone. The Tundra is an undeniable workhorse, with a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds and a payload limit of 1,940 lb.

Standard Features According to Trim Level

While the SR is generally a no-nonsense truck that gets the job done, it has some nice amenities that aren’t always found on a base trim. Its highlights are automatic climate control (single zone), LED exterior lighting, heated exterior mirrors, front door handles with touch-sensor lock and unlock (Smart Key), push-button ignition, a 12V power outlet, a power-sliding rear window, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, 18-inch wheels, and a back-row under-seat storage compartment with adjustable partitions. The SR Tow Package is offered to supply a Class IV tow hitch receiver and 7-pin wiring harness. The SR5 is enhanced with LED fog lights and a more versatile truck bed that has fixed cargo bed tie-down points and a deck rail system with four adjustable tie-down cleats. As a new development for 2023, this trim is eligible for the SX Appearance Package, which is available with four paint colors: Celestial Silver Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Midnight Black Metallic, and White. The package drops the door badges for a clean look while adding dark-gray wheels, body-colored exterior accents, and a blacked-out interior. (Versions with 4WD also get a black 4x4 badge.)

The Limited trim begins the middle range of the Tundra selection with SofTex (faux leather) seating, 20-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated/ventilated power-adjustable front seats, position memory for the driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a HomeLink universal garage door opener. Its outside mirrors are also auto-dimming and have reverse-gear tilt-down as well as integrated turn-signal and blind-spot indicators. The TRD Off-Road Package will add skid plates, mudguards, all-terrain tires on 20-inch wheels, and a specialized suspension with Bilstein shocks.

The hallmarks of the Platinum are genuine leather seats, LED bed lights, wireless phone charging, a panoramic moonroof, auto-leveling headlights, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a digital rearview mirror, a heated and power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, heated/ventilated rear seats, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a bed-mounted 120V power outlet, rear door sunshades, and trailer backup assist technology. The 1794 Edition equipment list is similar to the Platinum’s, but the differences are the 1794 Edition’s chrome exterior accents and wood-grain interior trim.

The trail-ready TRD Pro starts out with the nostalgic “TOYOTA” stamped grille and adds a front stabilizer bar, a multi-terrain monitor (with driver-selected front, side, and rear views), an electronically controlled locking rear differential, 18-inch BBS wheels, an off-road suspension with a 1.1-inch lift, FOX internal bypass shocks, mudguards, a TRD front skid plate, and TRD Pro decals and badges. The Capstone lives up to its lofty name with power running boards, a 10-inch head-up display, semi-aniline leather upholstery with contrast stitching, a “CAPSTONE” door badge, 22-inch wheels, and trim-specific floor mats. Toyota also offers a variety of optional packages that will add some of the aforementioned premium features to the trims that don’t get them as standard equipment.

Driver-Assistive Tech

The Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 package of advanced driver-assist technologies appears on every 2023 Tundra. Included in this sought-after bundle are automatic high beams, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, and road sign assist. The Limited trim and above get front and rear parking assist with automatic braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and trailer merge warning, while a panoramic view monitor is added to the Platinum and Capstone.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The two lowest trims – the SR and SR5 – receive an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless smartphone integration (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and an audio system with a half-dozen speakers. The Limited and above move way up to a 14-inch touchscreen, which is available on the SR5. A premium JBL sound system with 12 speakers comes standard on the Platinum, TRD Pro, and Capstone and is optional on the Limited.
