2022 Toyota Sequoia

2022 toyota sequoia exterior

Overview

Full-sized SUVs certainly have their legions of fans, and the 2022 Toyota Sequoia is a well-outfitted leader in that segment. It’s a true SUV by definition, with body-on-frame construction and available four-wheel-drive, as opposed to the unibody construction and all-wheel drive that define the crossover class. The ’22 Sequoia is a natural choice for anybody who needs space for up to eight people, has a substantially sized trailer to pull, or just enjoys driving a vehicle with a high perch and heft. Toyota has announced that the 2022 model year will be the final run for the conventional gasoline-only version of the Sequoia. The next generation of the Sequoia, starting with the 2023 model, will be made with a more efficient hybrid powertrain. In the meantime, let’s look at the details of the ’22 version.

Mechanical Specs

Toyota's largest SUV comes in six trims: the SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, TRD Pro, and Platinum. The power source for all is a 5.7-liter eight-cylinder engine making 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. of torque; a six-speed automatic transmission completes the powertrain. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard across the lineup, except for the TRD Pro, which gets the four-wheel drivetrain that’s optional on the other trims. Fuel economy with either drivetrain is EPA-estimated at 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. A properly equipped Sequoia can tow up to 7,400 pounds.

Trims and Standard Features

The Sequoia is an upscale SUV, and the SR5 is a well-outfitted base trim, with the likes of LED lighting, tri-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver's seat, power heated exterior mirrors, proximity keyless entry, a leather-trimmed tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, front and rear parking sensors, trailer sway control, running boards, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The TRD Sport is more focused on the trails, coming with an off-road-tuned suspension. It also gets 20-inch black-finished wheels and black exterior accents, and second-row captain's chairs take the place of the bench seat (which can still be added back as an option). Buyers of the SR5 and TRD Sport can choose to add the Premium Package (leather seating, heated fronts seats, a ten-way power driver's seat, a six-way power front passenger seat, a power-folding and reclining third row, and infotainment upgrades).

Things get more upscale with the Limited, where the standard equipment list contains all of the items in the Premium Package, plus a power liftgate, 20-inch machine-finished alloy wheels, chrome exterior trim. The second row reverts to the bench seat, although the captain's chairs are available. Those who want a mysterious mood for their Sequoia can get the Nightshade Special Edition, which modifies the Limited with blacked-out 20-inch wheels, dark chrome and black exterior accents, and captain's chairs for the middle row.

The TRD Pro backs up its offroad credentials with most of the previously mentioned amenities, plus blacked-out exterior accents, TRD FOX shock absorbers, 18-inch black BBS forged aluminum wheels, a front skid plate, black aluminum running boards, power heated side mirrors with a power-folding feature, trim-specific leather upholstery, second-row captain’s chairs, and TRD interior badging and accents. The Platinum adds an adaptive air suspension, perforated leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and a driver's position memory system.

Advanced Safety Technology

Every 2022 Sequoia comes with a complete collection of advanced driver aid in the Toyota Safety Sense technology suite. It contains automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams.

Infotainment and Connectivity

A 7-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard across the Sequoia lineup, as are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth (for audio streaming and hands-free phone calls), three USB ports, SiriusXM satellite radio, and access to a Wi-Fi hotspot and Toyota Connected Services. The SR5 and TRD Sport have an eight-speaker audio system that will be upgraded if the Premium Package is purchased (that will also add navigation). Navigation is standard on the Limited and higher trims. At the same time, the Limited and Nightshade get a 12-speaker premium sound system, while the TRD Pro and Platinum come with a 14-speaker JBL audio unit.
