2022 Toyota GR Supra

Overview

The original Toyota Supra had its beginning as an upgrade to the Celica coupe in the 1970s. Over a series of generations, the Supra grew into its own nameplate, with an emphasis on performance and value. Even today, these older Supras are treasured by enthusiasts and collectors. After a 20-year absence, Toyota brought the car back in 2019 as a hardtop two-seater in a collaboration with BMW, which simultaneously redesigned its Z4 roadster. These two attractive models share a lot of specs, but the GR Supra comes in at a lower price point, putting it into reach for more drivers. The Supra is the first Toyota to use the GR label. This badge signifies enhanced capability and highlights the automaker’s in-house performance division, Gazoo Racing. For 2022, the limited-production A91-CF Edition joins the lineup, with just 600 units made.

Trims and Powertrain

GR Supra shoppers can choose from four trims: 2.0., 3.0, 3.0 Premium, and the limited-run A91-CF Edition. The 2.0 comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 255 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. A 382 horsepower (368 lb.-ft. of torque) turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder is at the heart of the other trims. Rear-wheel drive with an eight-speed automatic transmission is the sole drivetrain for all versions.

But the Supra’s performance doesn’t come with a penalty at the pump, as both powerplants are nicely fuel-efficient. The EPA has estimated fuel economy for the 2.0-liter engine at 25 mpg around town and 32 mpg on the highway. That changes to 22 city/30 highway with the larger engine.

Standard Equipment

The Supra 2.0 comes nicely equipped with LED exterior lighting, heated auto-folding side mirrors, proximity keyless entry, Alcantara/leather-trimmed sport seats with lumbar and bolster adjustments, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, push-button start, 18-inch aluminum wheels, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The Supra 3.0 is upgraded with 19-inch forged aluminum wheels, four-piston Brembo brakes, an adaptive variable sport suspension, 14-way power seats, and a driver’s-seat memory system.

The 3.0 Premium takes things to the next level with heated leather sport seats, sport pedals, and a color head-up display. At the top of the line, the limited-run A91-CF Edition takes advantage of carbon-fiber (hence the CF in the name) to reduce weight and create a truly distinctive look. Carbon fiber is used for the front and rear canards, the front splitter and side rockers, and the rear spoiler. Other than that, it’s equipped similarly to the 3.0 Premium (minus the head-up display) with the A91-CF also getting unique Alcantara/leather-trimmed sport seats.

Safety and Technology

All 2022 GR Supras come with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. The Driver Assist Package is offered on the 3.0 Premium and A91-CF to add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors with emergency braking, and full-speed dynamic cruise control. Exclusive to the 3.0 is the optional Safety & Technology Package, which includes everything listed in the Driver Assist Package equipment plus some additional infotainment features as detailed in the next paragraph.

The Supra’s infotainment system has an 8.8-inch touchscreen, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth connectivity. The 2.0 has four speakers, but the 3.0 gets ten. The 3.0 Premium and A91-CF move up to a 12-speaker JBL sound system along with navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay integration, access to remote services, and wireless device charging. Adding the Safety & Technology Package to the 3.0 trim brings the infotainment system up to the level of the higher trims.
