2022 Toyota Avalon

2022 toyota avalon exterior

Overview

The Avalon debuted in 1994 as a well-outfitted full-sized sedan for those seeking Toyota’s longevity and reliability in a larger and more luxurious package than the solidly selling Corolla and Camry. The Avalon has always catered to drivers with a taste for elegance, making it a fine alternative to a Lexus. With that said, if you’ve been a longtime Avalon loyalist and want to own the final version of this flagship model, this is your chance, as Toyota plans to discontinue it after this year.

Trims and Powertrain

The three trim levels of the ’22 Avalon are XLE, Limited, and Touring trim levels (there’s also a gas-electric hybrid version, which we cover on a separate page). The powertrain of this front-wheel-drive four-door consists of a 3.5-liter V6 (301 hp and 267 lb.-ft. of torque) and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The EPA has found that the XLE achieves 22 mpg around town and 32 mpg on the open road, while the Limited and Touring both return 22 city and 31 highway.

Features By Trim

As a full-sized luxury-level sedan, the ’22 Avalon certainly doesn’t cut corners. The base XLE starts out with great features like heated side mirrors with integrated turn-signal and blind-spot indicators, 17-inch silver-painted alloy wheels, sound-absorbing windows, a dual exhaust with chrome tips, and keyless entry. Its plush cabin is set up with push-button ignition, automatic climate control (two zones), a backup camera with dynamic gridlines, a 7-inch driver information display, perforated SofTex and Ultrasuede seats (heated in the front row), a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, selectable drive modes (Eco, Normal, and Sport), hydrographic interior trim, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 12-volt power outlet, four USB ports, and a 60/40-split folding rear seat with an armrest and cupholders. This trim is eligible for a power tilt-and-slide moonroof with a sliding sunshade and a wireless smartphone charger as well.

The Limited puts the moonroof and wireless smartphone charger on its standard equipment roster, along with a 10-inch head-up display, ambient interior lighting, and wood interior trim. It also upgrades to auto on/off and adaptive-cornering LED headlights with smoked chrome bezels, 18-inch chrome alloy wheels, high-tech side mirrors with memory and driver’s-side auto-dimming, leather seats, ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, and a heated steering wheel with position memory.

The Touring is the sportiest of the batch, as evidenced by its gloss-black grille with sport mesh insert, gloss-black rear spoiler, 19-inch black-painted alloy wheels, dual exhaust with quad chrome tips, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, Sport+ drive mode, and aluminum interior trim and pedal covers. It also goes back to the perforated SofTex and Ultrasuede seats also found in the XLE, and gets a unique note thanks to an intake sound generator and engine sound enhancement technology; active noise control is also standard.

Safety and Technology

Each ’22 Avalon has the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ system of advanced driver assist technologies, which includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, road sign assist, and lane tracing assist. All trims also gets rear seat reminder (new this model year), a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and hill start assist. The Limited and Touring are eligible for a surround-view monitor.

Occupants of the XLE will stay connected and entertained through an infotainment system with a 9-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, eight speakers, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The Limited and Touring also get integrated navigation and a 14-speaker JBL sound system, both of which are optional on the XLE.
