2022 Toyota Avalon Hybrid

Overview

The elegance of the word “Avalon” fits the full-sized sedan it was bestowed upon when Toyota introduced the model in 1994, two years after the final Cressida rolled off the assembly line. The Avalon has always represented luxury for this automaker – almost as a response to the offshoot Lexus line, where the plushness factor is made obvious. Toyota opened up a new door in 2012 by adding the Avalon Hybrid to the lineup so that eco-conscious drivers could feel good while enjoying heightened fuel efficiency. It’s been the sole full-sized hybrid sedan on the market for some time now, but that will come to an end after this model year, when Toyota will drop the Avalon nameplate. You can still grab a brand-new Avalon Hybrid while they last, and it’ll come with standard warranties (3 years/36,000 miles basic and 5 years/60,000 miles on the powertrain) plus 8 years/100,000 miles of coverage for the hybrid system. Coverage on the hybrid battery lasts 10 years or 150,000 miles. On this page we’ll look at just the 2022 Avalon Hybrid (the standard gasoline-only Avalon gets its own page).

Trims and Powertrain

The last year of the Avalon Hybrid gives buyers three grades to select from: the XLE, XSE Nightshade, and Limited. Their powertrain consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, two electric motors, and a lithium-ion battery pack, with a combined output of 215 horsepower and 149 lb.-ft. of torque. All Avalon Hybrids are front-wheel-drive and use a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The EPA has determined this gas-electric sedan’s fuel economy at 43 mpg city/44 mpg on the highway for the XLE and 43 mpg for both city and highway for the XSE and Limited, which are slightly heavier because of added standard equipment.

Standard Equipment and Options

The XLE may be considered a base model, but it’s full of excellent features more commonly found on high trims. Its seats are clad in a blend of perforated SofTex (simulated leather) with Ultrasuede accents, and they’re heated and power-adjustable (eight ways) in the front row. The other highlights are dual-zone automatic climate control, auto on/off LED headlights and taillights, automatic high beams, heated power-adjustable exterior mirrors, proximity keyless entry, 17-inch alloy wheels, noise-reducing side windows and windshield, a 7-inch driver information display, a drive-mode selector, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a 60/40-split folding rear seat. A power moonroof can be added as an a la carte option.

The power moonroof comes standard on the XSE, which also adds a wireless device charger, trim-specific exterior accents in black (including the 19-inch wheels) a rear spoiler, paddle shifters, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Limited is the way to go for a loaded-up standard package that includes a heated steering wheel, adaptive cornering headlights, 18-inch wheels in chrome alloy, a head-up display, genuine leather seats (heated and ventilated in front), heated rear outboard seats, real wood interior accents in the cabin, and ambient interior lighting.

Safety and Technology

The Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ suite of driver-assist technologies comes standard, adding automatic high beams, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, and full-speed dynamic radar cruise control, and road sign assist. The Advanced Safety Package is only available for the Limited; it will add a surround-view monitor with perimeter scan, Intelligent Clearance Sonar, and rear cross-traffic braking.

The Avalon Hybrid’s base infotainment system has a 9-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, a sound system with eight speakers, SiriusXM satellite radio, four USB ports, access to Toyota telematics, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The Limited upgrades its audio unit to a 14-speaker JBL system; navigation is also included on the Limited, but it’s optional on the other trims.
