In the SUV world, there are few vehicles like the storied 4Runner. Rugged and durable, this Toyota can handle everyday duties and off-road adventures. In fact, when it’s equipped with four-wheel drive and other trail-ready components, the 4Runner is among the most capable off-road vehicles you can buy.

Beyond the 4Runner’s all-terrain credentials is an SUV that works well as a daily driver, with plenty of cargo space for weekend getaways or trips to the home improvement store. With seating for up to seven and potentially 89.7 cubic feet of hauling space, this vehicle is all about flexibility. The 4Runner is also one of the few SUVs with a power rear window, making moving extra-long items a breeze. A properly equipped 4Runner can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

For the 2022 model year, Toyota introduces the TRD Sport, a value-oriented trim with all of the essential equipment for taking it off the pavement. Plus, all 4Runners are now equipped with full LED exterior lighting as well as being covered by 24 months/25,000 miles of Toyota Care complimentary scheduled maintenance (mainly oil changes and tire rotations) and roadside assistance.

Trims and Powertrain

The 4Runner is sold in eight trims: SR5, Trail Special Edition, SR5 Premium, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro. The power source is a 4.0-liter V6 making 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. of torque; it works with a five-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the SR5, Trail Special Edition, SR5 Premium, TRD Sport, and Limited; four-wheel drive is available on those trims and standard on the TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and TRD Pro. The EPA-estimated fuel economy for all 2022 4Runner trims is 16 mpg around town and 19 mpg on the highway, regardless of drivetrain.

Standard Equipment and Options

The base SR5 is equipped with keyless entry, LED lighting (exterior), heated power side mirrors, roof rails, rear privacy glass, 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning with second-row vents, an eight-way power driver’s seat, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel wrapped in leather, and a 40/20/40-split reclining and fold-flat second-row seat. The SR5 Premium trim adds heated power side mirrors with integrated turn-signal indicators, leatherette seats (heated in front), a four-way power front passenger seat, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Trail Special Edition gets a Yakima roof-mounted cargo basket, custom fabric upholstery, a sliding rear cargo deck with under-floor storage, and a trim-exclusive 40-quart cargo-area cooler. The TRD Sport is upgraded with a sport suspension, 20-inch wheels, a hood scoop, heated front seats, and a four-way power front passenger seat.

If your adventures involve travels off the beaten path, consider the TRD Off-Road, which is equipped like the SR5 but with trail-ready additions such as Crawl Control (for low-speed acceleration and braking management), Multi-Terrain Select, and a locking rear differential. The similarly extra-rugged TRD Off-Road Premium gets those features along with the same general equipment upgrades as the SR5 Premium.

The Limited is the luxury edition, with 20-inch alloy wheels, chrome exterior accents, a sport suspension, a power moonroof, perforated leather seats (heated and ventilated in the front row), and dual-zone automatic climate control. The TRD Pro shows off the highest capability, getting the equipment mentioned for the TRD Off-Road Premium plus a Fox high-performance suspension, auto on/off headlights, a power moonroof, and dual-zone automatic climate control. A power moonroof is an option for the SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium, while the SR5, SR5 Premium, and Limited can be ordered with a 50/50-split third row.

Safety and Technology

All 2022 4Runners are equipped with Toyota Safety Sense, the automaker’s suite of advanced-technology driver aids. These features include a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard on the SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and the TRD Pro (this feature is available on the TRD Sport). The Limited also gets standard front and rear parking sensors.

The base infotainment system has an 8-inch touchscreen, voice recognition, a USB media port, two USB charging ports, Bluetooth for phone use and audio streaming, SiriusXM satellite radio, Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and eight speakers. Access to a Wi-Fi hotspot and Toyota’s telematics is standard as well. The SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro get navigation, which is an option on the lower trims. The Limited and TRD Pro also get a 15-speaker JBL sound system.
