2021 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Overview

The Toyota Camry has been a staple midsized sedan in the U.S. since 1983. It has maintained its popularity through quite a few generations, but one of its most significant developments came in 2007 when it was made available with a hybrid powertrain. With greater fuel economy, the Toyota Camry Hybrid quickly became an attractive choice for everyday drivers who wanted to lower their carbon footprint just a tad more. For 2021, the Camry Hybrid gets a few significant upgrades over the outgoing version. Its styling has been updated inside and out, and a more sport-minded XSE trim level has been introduced. Additionally, a larger optional infotainment system is now offered, and the suite of active safety technologies has been enhanced.

Trims and Powertrain

The ‘21 Camry Hybrid is sold in LE, SE, XLE, and XSE trim levels. Their gas-electric hybrid powertrain consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor that combine to make 208 horsepower. An electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT) takes care of the gear ratios, and a four-mode (EV, Eco, Normal, Sport) drives selector allows for a more customized driving experience as your whims dictate. All 2021 Camry Hybrids are front-wheel drive. According to EPA estimates, the base LE returns 51 mpg in the city and 53 mpg on the highway. The other trims achieve 44 city/47 highway.

Comfort and Convenience

The LE gets automatic LED headlights, keyless entry for the front doors and trunk, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, two USB ports, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seatback. Two packages are offered: Cold Weather and Convenience. The Cold Weather Package adds heated side mirrors, a heated steering wheel, and heated front seats, and the Convenience Package supplies an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a universal garage door opener. The SE is a sportier take on the LE, with a more athletic design, a sport-tuned suspension, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and SofTex simulated-leather upholstery with fabric inserts. The XLE gets the contents of both the LE’s packages, minus the heated steering wheel and universal garage door opener, which remain optional. It also gets chrome exterior accents, leather upholstery, a power-adjustable front passenger’s seat, and ambient interior lighting.

A Driver Assist Package is offered to add ventilated front seats, a head-up display, a surround-view camera system, and rear automatic braking; navigation system is an a la carte option. The top-level XSE gets all of the features listed for the SE and XLE, plus gloss-black grille trim and patterned metal interior trim. The optional items mentioned for the XLE remain available, as is a black roof; a moonroof is offered on all trims.

Safety and Technology

All trims come with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ suite of active safety features. This includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane tracing assist, and road sign assist. The XLE and XSE are also equipped with a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert.
