Overview

Car shoppers who aren’t fully familiar with the Toyota lineup could be wondering about the differences between a Prius and Prius Prime. The “Prime” designation used on vehicles like the RAV4 and Prius refers to their plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. The Prius and Prius Prime have different styling, but their performance capabilities vary as well. Although the Prius Prime will generate more horsepower than the standard Prius, both models deliver outstanding fuel economy. The biggest distinction, however, is the Prius Prime’s 44-mile all-electric range, which allows drivers with a reasonable daily commute to do all or most of their driving without the help of the car’s combustion engine. That said, the beauty of a PHEV over a fully electric vehicle is that the gas-burning part of the powertrain is there when you need it, eliminating concern over locating a charging station in the middle of your road trips.

Toyota’s warranty on the hybrid system’s components lasts 8 years or 100,000 miles. Every buyer or lessee also receives 2 years/25,000 miles of ToyotaCare coverage, which consists of complimentary scheduled maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations, and multipoint inspections) plus 24/7 roadside assistance.

Trim Levels, Powertrain, and Performance

The Prius Prime’s 2024 lineup consists of these grades: SE, XSE, and XSE Premium. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, two electric motors, and an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT) form the plug-in hybrid powertrain, which produces 220 net horsepower and 139 lb.-ft. of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, as is a drive mode selector with three settings: EV Mode, EV Auto Mode, and HV (Hybrid Vehicle) Mode.

The EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings are dependent on the trim level. The SE will return up to 53 mpg city and 51 mpg highway, with a fully electric range of 44 miles (127 combined MPGe). The XSE and XSE Premium share the same numbers, achieving up to 50 mpg city/47 mpg highway and 39 miles of all-electric range (114 combined MPGe). Via a 120-volt outlet, the Prius Prime will reach full charge in approximately 11 hours, while a 240-volt source will recharge it in about 4 hours.

Standard Amenities

The SE’s standard features include remote keyless entry (driver’s door only), cloth seats, climate control with pollen filter, push-button start, a heated tilt/telescopic steering wheel wrapped in SofTex (durable simulated leather), steering wheel-mounted climate and audio controls, heated power outside mirrors with folding capability, rain-sensing windshield wipers, LED exterior lighting (projector headlights/daytime running lights/taillights/brake lights), a smart key system for the driver door, a 7-inch LCD multi-information display, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, six USB ports (two each in the front row, center console, and second row), a cargo-area tonneau cover, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Buyers can add a fixed-glass roof, Digital Key capability, and an infotainment upgrade. The XSE Premium’s upgrades include Digital Key capability, heated and ventilated front seats, position memory for the driver’s seat, a power liftback, and a fixed-glass roof.
