2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid

Overview

Toyota took the expression “bigger is better” to heart in creating the 2024 Grand Highlander Hybrid. This latest addition to the automaker’s utility-vehicle lineup builds on over two decades of Highlander success by offering more space, capability, and efficiency. It can accommodate up to eight passengers in comfort, with an adult-friendly third row that offers 20 percent more legroom than the regular Highlander.

The Grand Highlander Hybrid stands out in other ways, too. It’s the first Toyota crossover to get the potent Hybrid MAX engine, which propels this sizeable vehicle from zero to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. Those not needing this level of acceleration can select the base powertrain, which delivers up to 37 mpg. One of the most notable stylings of the Grand Highlander Hybrid is the trapezoidal "hammerhead" grille that incorporates Toyota’s latest design language. This element blends seamlessly with the gently sculpted side panels and the user-friendly tailgate.

Model year 2024 marks the debut of the Grand Highlander Hybrid, which slots between the Highlander and the Sequoia. The conventionally powered (gasoline-only) Grand Highlander is covered separately.

Trims and Powertrains

Buyers can choose from three Grand Highlander Hybrid trims (XLE, Limited, and Platinum) and the two aforementioned powerplants. The XLE and Limited get the 245-horsepower base powertrain, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. Standard with the Platinum and optional in the Limited is the 362-hp Hybrid MAX powertrain. The XLE comes with front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is optional. The Limited and Platinum, regardless of their powertrain, are made only with all-wheel drive.

The EPA-estimated fuel economy for the 2.5-liter powertrain is 36 to 37 mpg around town and 32 to 34 on the highway, based on the trim level and drivetrain. Grand Highlander Hybrids with the Hybrid MAX system are EPA-estimated to return 26 city/27 highway.

Behind the front row, the Grand Highlander Hybrid offers 97.5 cubic feet of cargo space, more than both the Highlander and the full-sized Sequoia SUV. The cargo capacity changes to 57.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 20.6 cubic feet in the cargo area when all seats are in use. The maximum towing limit for the Grand Highlander Hybrid is 5,000 pounds, regardless of the powertrain.
