2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Overview

Finding a vehicle that checks all the boxes on your wish list can seem impossible; however, the 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid proves that such well-roundedness is within reach. This versatile and fuel-efficient three-row crossover is remarkable in practically every respect. It’s spacious with 84.3 cubic feet of total cargo space, loaded with desirable features, and capable enough to hold its own when the paved road ends and the rugged dirt path begins. In short, the ’23 Highlander Hybrid can serve nearly every lifestyle and is a terrific choice for on-the-go drivers who are looking to spend more time on the road and less time at the fuel pump.

For model year 2023, the Bronze Edition, Limited, and Platinum get a new infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen. Unlike the Bronze Edition, though, the Limited and Platinum grades also receive a 12.3-inch multi-information display and power-folding side mirrors. The available wireless phone charger has been repositioned to a more convenient location in the center dashboard shelf, and a new Cypress Green exterior paint color is now in the palette.

Trims, Powertrain, and Performance

The 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is offered in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive and five trim levels: LE, XLE, Bronze Edition, Limited, and Platinum. The entire range is set up with a hybrid powertrain that combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas-burning engine with a pair of electric motors, with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT) completing the picture. The total system output of this arrangement is 243 horsepower. The FWD Highlander offers higher fuel efficiency, as the EPA estimates that it returns 36 mpg around town and 35 mpg on the open road, whereas the AWD version achieves 35 city/35 highway. It’s also rated to tow as much as 3,500 pounds.

Standard Equipment by Trim

The eight-passenger LE comes with some nice features: heated side mirrors with turn-signal and blind-spot warning indicators, a windshield wiper de-icer, a power liftgate, LED headlights and fog lights, proximity keyless entry (Smart Key) with push-button ignition, 14 cup and bottle holders, an overhead console sunglasses holder, and 60/40-split second- and third-row seatbacks. For comfort, it gets a power-adjustable driver’s seat, three-zone automatic climate control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Technology is also abundant in this base trim, which now gets a 7-inch multi-information display screen, five USB ports (one Type-A media and four Type-C charging), and dual 12V power outlets.

The seven-passenger XLE moves up on the scale with second-row captain’s chairs, a moonroof, roof rails, heated front seats with passenger power adjustments, synthetic-leather upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, wireless phone charging, and manual second-row sunshades. For buyers interested in the XLE but who prefer the second-row bench seat, it can be added back as an option. The stylish Bronze Edition gets exterior accents in its namesake color, plus side mirrors with position memory and puddle lights, rain-sensing wipers, a hands-free liftgate, ambient interior lighting, a digital rearview mirror, and two household-style 120V power outlets.

The Limited drops the bronze accents and rain-sensing wipers, but it’s equipped with everything else mentioned for the previous trim, along with noise-reducing front side windows, power-folding side mirrors, higher-output LED fog lights, genuine leather upholstery, ventilated front seats with position memory, a 12.3-inch multi-information display, and a tonneau cover for the cargo area. At the peak of the Highlander Hybrid hierarchy, the Platinum has an expansive panoramic glass roof, rain-sensing wipers, an adaptive front lighting system, heated second-row seats, a digital rearview mirror, and a 10-inch head-up display.

Active Safety Aids

When it comes to safety, the 2023 Highlander Hybrid earns plenty of praise, with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ bundle found on every trim. This standard technology package boasts a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, and full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control. All Highlander Hybrids also have a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. The Limited and Platinum are enhanced with front and rear parking sensors and automatic braking; the Platinum also gets a panoramic view monitor, which is optional for the Limited.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The standard multimedia system in the ’23 Highlander Hybrid consists of an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker sound system. The Bronze Edition upgrades to a 12.3-inch touchscreen (this is optional for the XLE), while the Limited and Platinum add a premier JBL audio system with 11 high-quality speakers.

On top of that, every trim receives trial subscriptions to many of Toyota’s ownership-enhancing services, like Remote Connect, Service Connect, Safety Connect, and Wi-Fi Connect. The Bronze Edition, Limited, and Platinum are sweetened with a trial subscription to the Drive Connect service (available via paid subscription for the other trims), which includes Cloud Navigation with Google Points of Interest, Intelligent Assistant voice recognition, and Destination Assist.
