Trims and Powertrains

The ’23 4Runner carries on the nameplate’s status as an off-road legend with eight trim levels offered: SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro. All get a 4.0-liter V6 engine that produces 270 hp and 278 lb.-ft. of torque; it’s joined to a five-speed automatic transmission. The SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, and Limited get standard rear-wheel drive, but they’re eligible for the four-wheel drivetrain that comes standard on the rest of the lineup. A third-row seat is optional for the SR5, SR5 Premium, and Limited to increase seating capacity from five to seven. Note that many of the high-level features you’ll read about below are available for the lower trims as options. The 4Runner has a standard tow hitch receiver that allows it to tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Equipment by Trim

The base SR5 has LED exterior lights (headlights, daytime running lights, fog lights, and taillights), a skid plate covering the engine and front suspension, heated side mirrors, roof rails, a windshield wiper de-icer, rear privacy glass, and proximity entry (Smart Key). Inside, there’s push-button ignition, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, three power outlets (two 12-volt and one 120-volt), three USB ports, an overhead console sunglasses holder, illuminated vanity mirrors, and a 40/20/40-split fold-flat second-row seat. The TRD Sport adds a sport-tuned suspension, a hood scoop, synthetic-leather seats, and special TRD badges and floor mats.

The SR5 Premium builds off the SR5 with upgraded side mirrors that include built-in turn signals, plus heated front seats, a power-adjustable front passenger’s seat, synthetic-leather upholstery, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink. The TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium are like the SR5 and SR5 Premium, respectively, but with these trail-ready bonuses: active traction control, a locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select with crawl control, and fabric upholstery. The new 40th Anniversary Special Edition is also based on the SR5, although it gets a special grille, bronze wheels, tri-colored exterior graphic stripes, and bronze interior stitching.

The Limited takes a more luxurious turn. In addition to the SR5 Premium’s amenities, it has automatic headlights, chrome exterior accents, a moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, perforated-leather upholstery, and driver’s seat position memory. The TRD Pro starts with the same equipment roster as the TRD Off-Road Premium’s and adds the moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, TRD high-performance shocks with rear remote reservoirs, TRD-tuned front springs, a transfer case skid plate, a TRD Pro-stamped front skid plate, all-terrain tires, a roof rack, all-weather floor liners, and a Multi-Terrain Monitor with front, side, and rear camera views.

Assistive and Safety Technology

Every trim comes with the Toyota Safety Sense technology suite, which consists of a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. Also issued separate from Toyota Safety Sense are blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and rear occupant alert. The Limited and TRD Pro add a panoramic view monitor, but only the Limited gets front and rear parking sensors.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Off-Road are set up with an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, Amazon Alexa, SiriusXM satellite radio, and an eight-speaker sound system. The SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road Premium, and 40th Anniversary Special Edition come with navigation and voice recognition, while the Limited and TRD Pro are treated to a high-end 15-speaker JBL audio system.
