2022 Toyota Sienna
Overview
Those who need to seat more than five people in their vehicle have three choices: an SUV, a three-row crossover, or a minivan. While that last option enjoyed its greatest popularity a couple of decades ago, the best minivan models remain on the market. Since its 1998 introduction, the Toyota Sienna has been a strong seller – especially with families, of course. It moved to a hybrid powertrain for the 2021 model year, raising its appeal with a boost in fuel efficiency and eco-friendliness. For 2022, Toyota brought out the Sienna Woodland Edition, with an array of attributes that prepare it for a different level of adventure: standard all-wheel drive, higher ground clearance, a tow-hitch receiver, and rooftop rails with crossbars. The automaker is even donating $250 to the National Environmental Education Foundation with the sale of each Woodland Edition.

Trims and Mechanical Specs
There are a half-dozen trim levels of the ’22 Sienna – LE, XLE, XSE, Woodland Edition, Limited, and Platinum – which can seat seven or eight depending on the configuration. While the Woodland Edition comes standard with AWD, the other trims have front-wheel drive by default but are eligible for AWD as an option. A 2.5-liter gasoline-burning engine joins either two or three electric motors (FWD versions get two and AWD versions get three) to form the hybrid powertrain along with a continuously variable transmission; the combined output is 245 horsepower. The EPA has estimated the FWD Sienna’s fuel economy at 36 miles per gallon for both around-town and highway driving; the AWD Sienna achieves 35 city/36 highway.
Standard Equipment
The LE gets a second-row bench seat and can seat up to eight passengers. Some highlights of its standard features are tri-zone automatic climate control, heated exterior mirrors with blind-spot indicators, power-sliding rear doors, LED headlights, keyless entry, push-button ignition, and a power driver’s seat. Everyone will stay juiced and connected thanks to six USB charge ports, a USB media port, and a 12-volt DC power outlet. The center seat in the second-row bench seat can be stowed when it’s not needed, and the 60/40-split third-row bench folds with the push of a button. The XLE changes its second-row configuration to a pair of captain’s chairs that slide away for easy access; this reduces the seating max to seven, but buyers who want this trim’s standard equipment along with the additional seat can opt to swap the second-row bench back in. The XLE also upgrades to four zones of automatic climate control, a power liftgate, LED fog lights, hands-free sliding side doors, simulated leather seats (heated in the front row), a power front passenger’s seat, and Smart Key advanced keyless entry. It also gets a moonroof, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a HomeLink universal garage door opener.
The XSE is strictly for seven passengers: there’s no option to swap out the captain’s chairs for the bench. It’s visually differentiated by a mesh-look front grille and black exterior accents, and it receives an in-car PA system and sport-style front seats. The Woodland Edition gets the adventure-forward features mentioned in the intro (AWD, increased ground clearance, roof rails and cross bars, and a tow hitch receiver and wiring harness with a 4-pin connector), plus wireless phone charging and a 120V power outlet. The Limited is eligible for the 120V outlet, but it gets standard leather seats (ventilated in the front row), power-folding exterior mirrors (with auto-dimming and reverse-gear tilt-down), chrome exterior accents, position memory for the driver’s seat and side mirrors, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, a 7-inch multi-information display, and sunshades for the second and third rows. The Platinum provides the most plush ride with a heated steering wheel, heated second-row captain’s chairs, trim-specific LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and a 10-inch head-up display.
Safety and Technology
All 2022 Siennas are equipped with a backup camera, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking. Also standard is Toyota Safety Sense, a suite of advanced technologies that includes automatic high beams, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, dynamic radar cruise control, and road sign assist. Front and rear parking sensors are added at the XLE level, and the Platinum gets a surround-view monitor.
An infotainment system with a 9-inch touchscreen comes standard on all trim levels. The system’s features include smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), Bluetooth for hands-free phone use and audio streaming, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Amazon Alexa. The LE gets six speakers, but two more speakers are added to the XLE and XSE. The Woodland Edition, Limited, and Platinum upgrade to a premium JBL audio unit with a dozen speakers and add navigation.
Optional Packages
The various Sienna trim levels can be upgraded with optional bundles. The LE Plus Package will furnish that trim with a wireless device charger, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, a moonroof, black roof rails, and eight speakers. The XLE Plus Package and XSE Plus Package will equip their respective trims with the wireless charger, moonroof, and black roof rails, plus a JBL audio system with 12 speakers. The three highest trims are eligible for the Entertainment Package containing a 1080p high-definition entertainment center with an 11.6-inch display, remote control, an HDMI input, and two sets of wireless headphones.
