Trims and Performance

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 is a rugged yet refined compact crossover that’s available in six trim levels: LE, XLE, XLE Premium, Adventure, TRD Off-Road, and Limited. Each gets a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (203 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque) paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to either the standard front-wheel drivetrain or the available all-wheel drivetrain (AWD is standard on the Adventure and TRD Off-Road). If you’re planning to pull a trailer, you’ll have to keep it light, as the ’22 RAV4 has a 1,500-pound max. As for fuel economy, the FWD version achieves an EPA-estimated 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. The AWD LE gets 27 city/34 highway, while the AWD XLE and XLE Premium return 27 city/33 highway, and the Adventure, TRD Off-Road, and AWD Limited are rated for 25 city/33 highway.

Equipment by Trim

The LE comes with LED headlights, rear privacy glass, remote keyless entry, an overhead console holder for sunglasses, three USB ports (one media and two charge), two 12-volt power outlets, and a 60/40-split rear seat with a folding center armrest and two cup holders. The XLE adds heated side mirrors with turn-signal and blind-spot warning indicators, front door-handle touch sensor lock and unlock, roof rails, push-button ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power driver’s seat, two additional USB charge ports, and a cargo area tonneau cover.

The XLE Premium receives LED fog lights, synthetic leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and no-slip dashboard storage trays. The Adventure earns its moniker with Multi-Terrain Select (Mud & Sand, Rock & Dirt, Snow, and Normal drive modes), a unique exterior appearance (a two-tone color scheme is available), raised roof rails, active grille shutters to optimize fuel economy, a 7-inch multi-information display, orange interior accents, a cargo-area storage net, and a 120-volt power outlet. The TRD Off-Road takes the ’22 RAV4’s trailblazing status up a notch with a special TRD-tuned suspension, a stainless-steel skid plate, red interior accents, and all-weather floor mats. Like the Adventure, it’s eligible for the two-tone exterior.

The Limited drops the more daring elements of the Adventure and TRD Off-Road in favor of additional luxury with side-mirror puddle lights, position memory for the driver’s seat, a power front passenger’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats, dark-brown interior accents, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, and blue ambient interior lighting.

Several optional features are available for the ’22 RAV4 as well. These include rain-sensing wipers, a digital rearview mirror, and a wireless phone charger. Many of the features mentioned as standard on higher trim levels are available for the lower-level grades, too.

Active Safety and Technology

Every trim has the Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver-assistive technologies. This package consists of a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the XLE and above trims, and a surround-view monitoring system is optional for the TRD Off-Road and Limited.

The LE, XLE, XLE Premium, and Adventure all get the base infotainment system with its 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a sound system with six speakers. The XLE, XLE Premium, and Adventure can be upgraded with a 9-inch touchscreen, and the XLE Premium and Adventure are eligible for an 11-speaker JBL sound system. The TRD Off-Road and Limited come with the 9-inch touchscreen, and the Limited gets the JBL sound system as standard. The TRD Off-Road and Limited are eligible for integrated navigation.
