2022 Toyota GR86

2022 gr86

Overview

Toyota is making driving enthusiasts very happy with the redesigned GR86, which kicks off the iconic nameplate’s second generation. This track-tested, professional-driver-approved rear-drive sports car has been meticulously engineered by the Toyota Gazoo Racing team, boasting significant upgrades that consist of a more aerodynamic and rigid body with a lower center of gravity, retuned transmissions, and a more powerful engine. As a result of these enhancements, the ’22 GR86 earned the coveted Gazoo Racing badge and a place among Toyota’s evolving sports car lineup. Every 2022 GR86 buyer will also get a free one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association (NASA), which includes access to one free High Performance Driving Event (HPDE) and discounted entry to NASA-authorized events. What’s more, the GR86 is covered by 2 years/25,000 miles of ToyotaCare, the automaker’s complimentary maintenance plan.

Trims and Performance

The 2022 GR86 is a rear-drive sports car that’s available in Base and Premium trim levels. The engine is a horizontally opposed 2.4-liter four-cylinder that makes 228 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque (that’s 23 hp and 28 lb.-ft. of torque greater than the outgoing model’s 2.0-liter mill). Two transmissions are offered: a standard six-speed automatic or an optional six-speed manual. With the stick shift, the ’22 GR86 can reach 60 mph from 0 in just 6.1 seconds. If the ’22 GR86 is paired with the automatic, its 0-to-60 time registers at 6.6 seconds.

Standard Equipment

While the ’22 GR86 mostly draws enthusiasts with its spirited performance and nimble handling, its premium features are a great part of its appeal as well. Some of the Base trim’s signature features are its black mesh grille, chrome-tipped exhaust pipes, sport-bolstered seats, 17-inch wheels wrapped with Michelin Primacy HP tires, GR circuit-tuned coil springs, rear suspension stabilizer bar, and Torsen limited-slip differential. It also gets auto-leveling LED headlights, heated side mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, two USB charging ports, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob with silver contrast stitching. For staying connected and entertained, there’s an infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, a six-speaker sound system, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The Premium trim is sweetened with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires on 18-inch matte black wheels, an adaptive front-lighting system, dual-stage heated seats with leather and synthetic suede trim, aluminum sport pedals, and an eight-speaker sound system.

Safety and Technology

In addition to its full array of air bags, the automatic-transmission version of the GR86 is also equipped with some driver-assist technologies. Regardless of trim level, all AT-equipped GR86s come with automatic high beams, pre-collision braking and throttle management, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and sway warning. The Premium trim with AT also gets blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
