2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
Overview
More and more three-row hybrids are appearing on the scene, but one has been around since well before the boom. The Toyota Highlander Hybrid was introduced to America at Detroit’s North American Auto Show in 2004. It’s not only powerful, capable, and fuel-efficient, it’s also fairly priced and is filled to the brim with desirable features. Plus, if you like to take road trips with the family or a half-dozen friends, the ’21 Highlander Hybrid will get you all where you need to go with creature comforts and minimal trips to the gas station.
Trims, Powertrain, and Fuel Economy
Toyota makes the Highlander Hybrid in four grades: LE, XLE, Limited, and Platinum. The LE seats up to eight passengers, but second-row captain’s chairs – which reduce the seating capacity to seven – are standard in the XLE, Limited, and Platinum. (Those who prefer the bench seat can add it back in the XLE and Limited as an option.) All trims get a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and two electric motors (one for each axle) that produce a collective 243 hp. An electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT) handles the gear ratios; front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available across the board. According to EPA estimates, the FWD versions get 36 mpg around town and 35 mpg on the highway; the AWD ones achieve 35 city/35 highway. Every trim level can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
Features By Trim
The ’21 Highlander Hybrid comes well appointed, and that goes for the base LE as well. It gets 18-inch wheels, LED headlights and fog lights, heated side mirrors with turn-signal and blind-spot indicators, a windshield wiper de-icer, a power liftgate, rear privacy glass, keyless entry and ignition, tri-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, eight cupholders and four bottle holders, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, five USB ports, two 12-volt power outlets, a 4.2-inch gauge cluster, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a rearview camera with projected path, and six cargo tie-down hooks. The XLE adds a sunroof, roof rails, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a universal garage door opener, simulated-leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power-adjustable front passenger’s seat, a wireless smartphone charger, a 7-inch gauge cluster, and second-row window sunshades.
The Limited receives 20-inch wheels, side-mirror puddle lights with reverse tilt-down and memory, high-output LED fog lights, unique exterior accents, a hands-free liftgate, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a rearview camera with dynamic gridlines, two 120-volt power outlets, ambient interior lighting, leather seats, a cargo area cover, and an in-car PA system. The range-topping Platinum has an adaptive front lighting system, rain-sensing wipers, a panoramic sunroof, a digital rearview mirror that lets you see what’s behind you even with a full cargo area, a 10-inch head-up display, and heated second-row outboard seats.
Safety and Technology
The Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ bundle of advanced safety features is a standard Highlander Hybrid feature. This advanced technology suite includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, lane tracing assist, and road sign assist. The Limited and Platinum get front and rear park assist with automatic emergency braking, too.
The ’21 Highlander Hybrid also has a ton of great connectivity and entertainment features. In the LE and XLE, the infotainment system has an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker sound system. The Limited adds navigation and an 11-speaker JBL sound system, while the Platinum gets a 12.3-inch touchscreen.
