There’s no denying that the RAV4 has been a Toyota mainstay throughout more than three decades of existence – and now it’s been recognized as America’s best-selling compact SUV. Model year 2026 is a big deal, as the RAV4 kicks off its sixth generation, which is defined by one change in particular: it’s now strictly a hybrid. The new gas-electric drive unit makes 236 combined horsepower, outperforming the previous RAV4 hybrid system by 17 ponies and the now-discontinued gas-only version by 23. For the first time in the RAV4, Toyota couples a front-wheel drivetrain to the hybrid powertrain, resulting in fuel economy up to 47 mpg (that’s 12 mpg more than the gas-only and 6 more than the previous-gen hybrid). Towing capability also improves, with most all-wheel drive trims rated to pull up to 3,500 pounds—double the capacity of the prior hybrids and 2,000 pounds more than the 2025 gas model.
Of course, fresh styling and updated technology are significant aspects of this redesign as well. RAV4 fans will notice new headlight and taillight designs, plus a restyled front fascia with sharper lines and angles. An integrated hammerhead grille defines most of the RAV4 family, while the sporty XSE stands apart with special accent lighting and the rugged Woodland boasts a boxier grille with Rigid Industries fog lights. New paint hues, Meteor Shower and Storm Cloud, join the general palette, with Everest and Urban Rock reserved for the Woodland.
On the tech side, Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, the automaker’s latest suite of driver-assist technologies, makes its RAV4 debut with the addition of Proactive Drive Assist. Toyota’s vehicle proximity notification system and blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert are now standard across the lineup. The cabin’s focus is an enhanced infotainment display (10.5 or 12.9 inches, depending on the trim) alongside a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Dual-zone automatic climate control is found even on the base trim, while all but the two entry-level grades now have wireless smartphone charging. The Woodland is equipped with a new Multi-Terrain Monitor that provides the driver with a view of the trail underneath, while the Limited stands out with dual wireless smartphone chargers and a panoramic glass roof. Later in the 2026 model year, Toyota will further expand the lineup with a plug-in hybrid powertrain to be offered on the SE, XSE, Woodland, and the all-new GR Sport, which will make a splash as the first-ever GR version of the RAV4.
