The Prius Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) looks and feels different since its physical transformation a few years ago. For 2026, a new Nightshade trim has joined the lineup, bringing the Prius PHEV into step with other Toyota nameplates that already had this special blacked-out version. Dominated by black exterior treatments and unique interior details, the Prius PHEV Nightshade has a more daring attitude and on-trend style.

Beyond matters of appearance, this highly regarded electrified hatchback continues with traditional Prius values like cargo-carrying versatility (there’s 20.3 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats) and exceptional fuel economy (up to 53 mpg). Add the convenience of a PHEV powertrain with up to 44 miles of all-electric range, and the Prius PHEV is ready for zero-emissions errand runs and traditional hybrid operation for longer travels.

Trims and Powertrain

The 2026 Prius Plug-In Hybrid comes to you in trim grades called SE, XSE, Nightshade, and XSE Premium. They employ a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that joins forces with Toyota’s exceptional plug-in hybrid system for a total of 220 horsepower. This output is channeled to the front wheels through an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT).



According to the official estimations of the EPA, the SE's fuel economy under hybrid operation reaches 53 mpg in the city and 51 mpg on the highway; the XSE, Nightshade, and XSE Premium are rated at 50 mpg around town and 47 mpg on the open road. For all-electric driving, the SE can travel up to 44 miles when it’s fully charged, while the other grades are rated for 39 miles. Charging time is approximately 4 hours on a Level 2/240-volt charger or about 11 hours using a standard 120-volt household outlet.

Standard Features

The SE comes with cloth upholstery, a heated steering wheel trimmed with SofTex leatherette, single-zone climate control, LED exterior lighting, proximity keyless entry for the driver’s door, push-button start, a 7-inch digital instrument display, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, heated power side mirrors, extendable dual sun visors with illuminated mirrors, a cargo-area cover, rain-sensing windshield wipers, six USB ports, and 17-inch alloy wheels with covers. The XSE is upgraded with SofTex upholstery, heated front seats, an eight-way power driver’s seat, proximity keyless entry for both front doors and the liftback, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, wireless device charging, and 19-inch alloy wheels.



The new Nightshade gets SofTex upholstery with contrast stitching, carbon-fiber-look dashboard accents, and black exterior trim elements, including its 19-inch alloy wheels. The XSE and Nightshade are available with a fixed-glass roof and a digital key. At the top of the hierarchy, the XSE Premium gets the fixed-glass roof as a standard feature, along with heated and ventilated front seats and a power liftback. It’s eligible for heated rear seats, a digital rearview mirror, and a solar-charging roof.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is installed on every trim. This advanced technology suite brings together forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, proactive driving assist, adaptive cruise control, road sign assist, safe exit assist, traffic jam assist, automatic high beams, and a rear seat reminder. Front and rear parking assist with automatic braking is standard on XSE, Nightshade, and XSE Premium and optional on the SE. The XSE Premium may be upgraded with a surround-view monitor and advanced parking assist. All trims also get a set of airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, hill start assist, a rearview monitor, and Smart Stop Technology (to manage unintended acceleration).

Infotainment and Connectivity

The SE, XSE, and Nightshade host an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, while the XSE Premium has a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen (available on the XSE and Nightshade). Every trim comes with wireless smartphone connectivity (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), Bluetooth, SiriusXM, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability. A six-speaker audio system is standard on SE, XSE, and Nightshade, with the XSE Premium upgrading to an eight-speaker JBL arrangement. Access to Toyota Connected Services is included on all for emergency support, cloud-based navigation, over-the-air updates, and remote functions via the Toyota app.
