2025 Toyota 4Runner

25 4runner

Overview

With the rebirth of the Land Cruiser and debut of the Grand Highlander for model year 2024, Toyota has been busy revamping its utility vehicle lineup. The automaker is now ready to launch the sixth-generation 4Runner for model year 2025. Reinventing this iconic off-roader involved retaining the 4Runner's classic abilities while embracing the latest technologies, with some aesthetic updating as well.

When it hits the streets later this year, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner will be instantly recognizable as the next iteration of what is to many the most legendary SUV. But lurking beneath the chiseled steel body is abundant state-of-the-art equipment. Most notably, Toyota has dropped the V6 in favor of a pair of more potent four-cylinder engines, including an i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain with 326 horsepower, the most ever in a 4Runner. At the same time, the 4Runner’s off-pavement abilities are rising to the next level with the addition of the Trailhunter, which will top the lineup by going beyond the TRD Pro with even more adventure-focused components. The new Platinum trim will suit 4Runner buyers who lean more toward plush attributes. The 2025 4Runner's technology has also been reinvented, starting with an all-new infotainment system with an available 14-inch touchscreen. In addition, the updated Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system will come standard on all grades.

Trims and Powertrains

To provide an option for every buyer, Toyota will offer the 2025 4Runner in nine trims: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off Road, TRD Off Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. The base powerplant for the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited grades will be a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid engine will be available on the TRD Off-Road and Limited and standard on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum grades. This powerplant pairs the turbo 2.4-liter engine with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the transmission, resulting in a combined output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Both engines are managed through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2025 4Runner will be offered in rear-wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive (4WD), or full-time 4WD, depending on the trim and configuration.

Standard Features

Toyota hasn’t yet released many details on the standard equipment for each 2025 4Runner trim, although they have revealed that the trademark slide-down rear window, a fan favorite, will return across the lineup. Other standard features across all trims will include proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and four USB ports. Highlights of the new Platinum grade will expand on the Limited with heated second-row seats, a head-up display, a towing package, automatic rain-sensing wipers, and unique exterior treatments. The Trailhunter turns the 4Runner into a factory-built overlanding machine, with the most notable elements being ARB Old Man Emu (OME) 2.5-inch forged shocks and 33-inch Toyo Open Country tires. The combination gives the Trailhunter 2 additional inches of ground clearance up front and 1.5 inches in the back. This most-rugged 4Runner will also have high-strength steel skid plates, a grille with an integrated 20-inch LED light bar including RIGID fog lamps, and a high-mount air intake. Inside, a 2,400-watt AC inverter will come standard to provide power for electronics and small tools.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

The automaker’s latest suite of advanced driving aids, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, is standard on all 4Runner grades. Its technologies will include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-tracing assist, road sign assist, automatic high beams, and proactive driving assist (PDA). As the newest update to Toyota Safety Sense, PDA provides gentle braking and steering support to maintain a safe vehicle distance and optimize control around curves. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert will also come standard.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The new 4Runner will get Toyota’s Audio Multimedia system with an 8-inch or 14-inch touchscreen (varying by trim and/or optional package). This infotainment technology includes wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration and access to Toyota Connected Services for cloud navigation, Wi-Fi connectivity, emergency help, vehicle monitoring, and remote features.
