2025 Toyota 4Runner

25 4runner

Overview

After over 40 years of producing the vaunted 4Runner, Toyota has unveiled the model’s sixth generation for 2025, marking a significant evolution for this iconic body-on-frame SUV. Built on Toyota's TNGA-F platform (shared with the Tacoma, Tundra, Land Cruiser, and Sequoia), the all-new 4Runner transitions away from V6 power in favor of a more potent turbocharged four-cylinder engine lineup that includes a robust hybrid offering.

The 2025 model year expands the trim lineup to nine with the introduction of the luxury-oriented Platinum and the overlanding-focused Trailhunter. The Platinum adds premium amenities to this traditionally rugged SUV, while the Trailhunter presents additional specialized off-road equipment, including Old Man Emu shocks and an ARB roof rack. The redesigned 4Runner retains its off-road capability while incorporating the latest technology, such as Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 and an available 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Trims and Powertrains

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner lineup is extensive, with nine trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. Most of them come standard with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque and tops the output of the previous generation’s V6. An upgrade to the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain is standard with the Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter and optional with the TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited. It starts with the base turbo 2.4-liter engine and adds a 48-horsepower electric motor to the transmission for a combined output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2025 4Runner is offered in rear-wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive (4WD), or full-time 4WD, depending on the trim and configuration. An eight-speed automatic transmission manages all drivetrains.

The EPA estimates the base engine's fuel economy at 19 to 20 mpg in the city and 24 to 26 mpg on the highway, depending on the drivetrain and trim. With the i-FORCE MAX powerplant, the estimations are 23 mpg around town and 24 mpg on the highway. With the proper towing equipment, the 4Runner can pull up to 6,000 pounds.

Standard Features

The entry-level SR5 has five-passenger seating that can be increased to seven with an optional two-person bench seat in the third row. This trim’s standard equipment includes fabric upholstery, a power rear liftgate window, automatic LED headlights, LED fog lights, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering column, roof rails, a 7-inch driver information display, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The strictly five-passenger TRD Sport adds a sport-tuned suspension, heated front seats, single-zone automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, heated power side mirrors with integrated turn signals, a leather-wrapped shift knob, wireless device charging, five USB ports, and 20-inch wheels. Upgrades for the TRD Sport Premium include heated and ventilated front seats, SofTex leatherette upholstery, an eight-way power driver's seat, a four-way power front passenger seat, a driver's memory system, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free power liftgate, and auto-dimming rearview mirror.

The TRD Off-Road is equipped similarly to the TRD Sport (minus the power liftgate, SofTex upholstery, heated steering wheel, and power-adjustable heated/ventilated front seats) but adds Bilstein shocks, Multi-Terrain Select with Crawl control, fixed running boards, underbody protection, and 33-inch all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels. The TRD Off-Road Premium earns its name by adding these plush amenities features to the TRD Off-Road: heated and ventilated front seats, SofTex leatherette upholstery, an eight-way power driver's seat, a four-way power front passenger seat, a driver's memory system, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free power liftgate, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

The Limited has a five-seat configuration that can be upgraded to seven seats with the optional third-row bench. Aside from that, its equipment roster includes leather upholstery, a power moonroof, power-folding side mirrors, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The TRD Pro adds robust off-road capability via TRD-tuned FOX QS3 Internal Bypass shocks with 2.5-inch aluminum housings and rear remote reservoirs, a performance air intake and exhaust, an exclusive front grille with a 20-inch LED lightbar, Rigid Industries LED fog lights, and 18-inch wheels. The interior gets SofTex upholstery with technical-camo-pattern inserts, heated and ventilated front seats, and most of the premium features listed for the Limited.

The Trailhunter carries over many of the upscale amenities of the TRD Pro (minus the moonroof) but shifts the 4Runner’s capabilities to overlanding via equipment like Old Man Emu (OME) 2.5-inch forged monotube shocks. Some of its other standard adventure-ready features are an ARB roof rack, frame-mounted steel rock rails, additional underbody protection, trim-specific interior treatments, and 18-inch bronze-finish wheels with 33-inch Toyo Open Country tires.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is installed on every 4Runner. This suite of sophisticated driver aids consists of forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front cross-traffic alert, lane-tracing assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, road sign assist, proactive drive assist (enhanced braking and steering support), and automatic high beams. TRD Sport Premium, Limited, and Platinum have a surround-view monitor, while the Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter get a multi-terrain monitor with enhanced views. Front and rear parking assist with automatic braking and pedestrian detection are added to the Limited and above. A set of nine airbags comes standard along with anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a rearview monitor that shows the projected path.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Infotainment in the SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Off-Road trims is centered on an 8-inch touchscreen, while the other trims move up to a 14-inch touchscreen. Both systems support wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio and have access to a Wi-Fi hotspot and Toyota Connected Services. The smaller touchscreen pairs with an eight-speaker sound system, while the larger touchscreen comes with a JBL unit with 14 speakers. The Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter are also set up with a JBL FLEX portable Bluetooth speaker that serves as a center channel speaker in the cabin and can be undocked for wireless sound outside the vehicle. This upgrade is optional for the TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road.
